Infused in pure water, Witch Hazel
- Botanical name: hamamelis virginica
- Parts used:bark or leaves.
- Other names: hazel nut, spotted elder
Witch Hazel herb is as astringent
that contains tannin and is styptic: which is another word for retarding bleeding.
This is an old fashioned remedy and a very effective astringent. Use it
after washing and before applying makeup or as an aftershave.
Witch Hazel can be helpful for
problem skin conditions, such as
- dry cracked skin
- razor burn
- sun burn
- eczema
- psoriasis
- cold sores; used alone or
in combination with lemon balm
Most preparations use an alcohol base, with only trace amounts of the herb. Alcohol dries the skin without
giving intended results.
A strong infusion, or salve
can help relieve local external inflammation and is considered an excellent treatment for under the skin bleeding conditions.

Suggestion to use for a thickening for
a poultice or a bolus is the added soothing and healing herb, Slippery Elm inner bark.

hazel can be used on the hair to ‘set’ it.
- salve or mild infusion is excellent for animals itchy skin.
